This small rapid growing shrub or tree matures in 35 to 65 years, and reaches a height of 10—15 feet with a broad spreading crown. The American Plum prefers well drained deep prairie loam, but will tolerate sand or gravely soil. American Plum is shade intolerant, but it can tolerate drought conditions. Dark green leaves turn pale golden-yellow in the fall. Armed with short thorn-like spur branches, showy white fragrant flowers appear in April or May. Edible fruit ripen in August or September and is red, orange, or yellow.
